    If the source is a gas, we could ionize it, and then apply a voltage to accelerate them towards the scatterer. Controlling the pressure of the gas, and with the correct voltage, we can avoid dielectric rupture, and if the distance between the plaques is long enough, the gas particles may reach the speed of sound.
