    In the video it is discussed that for the alpha > 0 case, we have that the lowest energy configuration is achieved when the dumbbell is oriented along the z-axis, so for theta = 0 or theta = 180 degrees. The highest energy is achieved for theta = 90 degrees, when the dumbbell lies in the xy plane. For alpha < 0 case, the function of theta reverses its sign, and hence the function is mirrored with respect to the x axis and the above conclusion is reversed, meaning that theta = 90 degrees gives the lowest energy, whereas theta = 0 or 180 degrees gives the highest energy. For alpha = 0, the quadrupole energy has no influence.
