    For alpha > 0: dumb-bell aligned with z-axis is the lowest energy configuration.

    For alpha = 0: orientation doesn’t matter (quadrupole energy is 0 then).

    For alpha < 0: lowest energy configuration if dumb-bell is perpendicular to the z-axis.
