Upon absorption of a photon with energy satisfying resonance, the total angular momentum of the atom rotates. When a range of different B values are scanned over, different occasions of resonance can happen. If the absorption peaks are closeby they can relate to the same change in total angular momentum, but they slight difference comes from hyperfine splitting of the levels.
