    What is different for these Zeemann-split levels is the quantum number m_J. This corresponds to the z-component of the total angular momentum of the vector. It gives the orientation of this angular momentum. If the atom changes into a state with a different m_J value by absorbing a photon that satisfies the EPR resonance condition, the total angular momentum will have another orientation.
