    Applying a magnetic field on the La atoms will cause an equidistant hyperfine splitting of the energy levels of the electron cloud proportional to m_J and the strength of the applied field B_0. The splitting is caused by the changing oriƫntation of the magnetic moment J, by flipping the magnetic moments of the unpaired electrons in the cloud.
    When a microwave photon with the right energy is absorbed by the La atom, an electron will be put into a higher orbit, with the same J of course, but a higher m_J, as long as the difference in m_J is 0 or one.
    Along with the temperature, the photon absorption will influence the distribution of orientations of the electron cloud along the magnetic field.
