An example where the multipole moment is used is the Fast Multipole Method wich is a numerical technique to calculate the force and energy over large distances in a system of many interacting particles. The idea is to group particles wich are close together and see it as one particle. The energy and force between these groups of particles is calculated from their multipole moments.
