    If we don’t first expand the interaction term Q direct product V in its multipole terms, there will be quite some difficulties in applying perturbation theory. The only possible perturbation that we could try is the one where we take the full QV direct product as the small unknown correction term. We might still be able to apply perturbation theory for problems with a small number of electrons, but when this number rises the interaction term will most likely also rise in value. The larger the QV term becomes, the harder it will be to apply perturbation theory.
