    I don’t see why the amplitude of the signal decreases when the intensity stays constant. To me this sounds counterintuitive from I=|A|^2

    The total intensity stays constant, that is the summed intensity from all peaks. If there are more peaks, this intensity needs to be distributed and therefore the amplitudes get lower.
