    J = 2 is a result of S + L, which would mean that they are parallel and pointing in the same direction.

    J = 0 is a result of S – L, which corresponds to them being parallel, but pointing in the opposite direction.

    Hence, J = 1 would correspond to S and L being perpendicular.
