    for alpha<0: theta=90° is lowest energy configuration, this corresponds to the dumb-bell lying in the x-y plane.

    for alpha=0: the energy is independent of the orientation, so all orientations are lowest energy configurations.

    for alpha>0: theta=0° is lowest energy configuration, this corresponds to the dumb-bell lying parallel to the z-axis.
