    I think that if alpha < 0 (large rings close to each other), the lowest-energy orientation of the dumbbell is in the xy-plane. If alpha = 0, it doesn’t matter. For alpha > 0 (small rings far apart), the dumbbell should be parallel to the z-axis to have the lowest energy.
