    When alpha>0 (like in the example of the slides) the lowest-energy orientation is the orientation where the dumbbell is fully aligned with the z-axis.

    When alpha=0 the quadrupole correction vanishes, which means that all orientations have the same energy, the monopole energy.

    When alpha<0 the lowest-energy orientation is the orientation where the dumbbell lays in the xy-plane.
