Perturbation theory demands that the hamiltonian is first separated in a main term that is responsible for most of the energy and a second term that has much less associated energy.
In the case of a general shape nucleous, the second term is very complex, includes a series of considerations like superposition and so on. It must be expanded to be solvable.
