    J=2 corresponds to L+S, the maximum value, which implies that L and S are parallel and pointing in the same direction. J=0 corresponds to |L-S|, the minimum value, implying that L and S are parallel and pointing in opposite directions. J=1 must then correspond to L and S perpendicular to each other.
