    In the case of alpha > 0:
    The radius of the rings is small compared to the seperation, thus each side of the dumbbel is ‘pulled’ towards the closest ring along the z-axis. (Components along x-y axis are negligible)

    In the case of alpha < 0:
    The radius of the rings become enormous compared to the seperation between them. This means that the components along the x-y axis become more important than the z axis and thus the dumbel will orientate along the x-y plane (any direction in the plane).

    In the case of alpha = 0:
    The terms in the x-y plane and the term along the z axis are equal. Thus, the dumbbel is not inclined to preferentially orientate along the z axis or x-y plane and will orientate freely.
