For the J = 0 state, L and S are parallel but pointing in opposite directions leading to their contributions to the total energy from interaction with the magnetic field negating eachother or at least reducing eachothers effect and thus a lower energy state.
For the J = 1 state, L and S are perpendicular and thus their contributions will not affect eachother but only one of them can be ideally positioned to interact with the magnetic field leading to some increased energy but not a lot.
For the J = 2 state, L and S are parallel and pointing in the same direction which allows for a maximal interaction with the magnetic field thus increasing the states energy the most.
