    I am a bit confused by this question. The monopole shift is always positive but it is a correction due to a first order perturbation. In this case, we have the exact solution toy model A, which happens to have a lower energy. Perhaps the higher order corrections to the energy shift are negative in toy model A, making the total energy lower?
