In toy model A, we introduce an extra negative charge, which isn’t the same as what we did to obtain the expression for the monopole shift. To calculate the monopole shift, we just allowed overlap, but still with the same charge distribution we had before.
Now, we change the charge distribution by introducing the extra negative charge.
So the negative contribution isn’t due to a monopole shift, but to the changing of the charge distribution.
