    For a smaller value of l/d, the total quadrupole energy contribution becomes smaller as well. So the monopole + quadrupole approximation is most accurate when the correction is small. This has nothing to do with perturbation theory though!

    Yes, I agree. I thought we were working in the case without overlap so then we would not take perturbation theory into account.
