When the photon energy matches the energy difference between the zeeman levels of the La atom, they will be absorbed. This absorbed energy will rotate the orientation of the atom to a state sith a higher energy (higher m_J). Then this excited nucleus will de-excite, emitting a photon with energy matching the energy difference between its zeeman levels
