For alpha > 0, the prefactor is positive and the orientation that minimizes the energy is with the dumbbell along the z-axis.
For alpha < 0, the situation is the opposite, being the prefactor now negative, the orientation lying over the x-y plane minimizes the energy.
For alpha = 0, the prefactor being 0, vanishes the quadrupole contribution.
