    If we don’t do a multipole expansion first, the nucleus-electron interaction would be much more complicated to calculate, and possibly even impossible. Multipole expansion allows us to see the different energy level seperations so you can focus on which part you are interested in. Without multipole expansion, this is not possible, and you would only see the effect on the entire system.
