    I would start from the more classical case as the concept of orbitals is rather difficult. You could look at the situation as you sitting on a big ball and there is a small ball moving around the big ball. Sometimes the small ball is really far and sometimes the small ball is inside the big ball. The time-averaged position is then the distance from the centre of the big ball for which 50% of the time the small ball is closer.
