– (1) Which information about the nucleus and which information about the hyperfine interaction can you infer, when given the picture above?
We can see that it has spin 1 and that hyperfine splitting has occurred.
– (2) Describe the orientation of a nuclear ensemble in the conditions given in the picture above, at low temperature.
At low temperature we expect the energy to be low, so most nuclei should be in the lowest energy state, which could give a field as a result. So most would point downwards.
