    (1) The nucleus has spin I=1, giving three magnetic substates (m_I = -1, 0, +1). The energy splitting between them shows the presence of a hyperfine interaction with an external field.

    (2) At low temperature, the nuclei will mostly occupy the lowest energy substate, causing the ensemble to become polarized along the field direction.
