If I wanted to conduct a resonance scattering experiment in this way, I would have difficulty firstly with arranging the space for a suitably long track, and secondly with stopping the source. To overcome these problems, a synchrotron-type track could be made, in which the source would move with a constant velocity, would not have to brake, and the absorber could be placed anywhere on the tangent to the “synchrotron” circle.
