    So to begin with, the position of an electron is usually never known exactly but the general radius and shape it has around the atom (nucleus) is known. There is a general area understood to be where the electron could exist in. This would be like guessing what you are having for dinner, maybe its a Thursday and so far you have always had soup Thursdays. However, there are times when this generally position extends to the center of the atom itself (the nucleus). This could be exemplified by looking in the fridge and seeing that there are only ingredients for pizza which you only have on Fridays. The structure points to an overlap which means the model must be updated, for the atomic energy levels they must be adjusted to account for this potentially overlap. Continuing with my example this means you must adjust your appetite for pizza (which is considerably easier to achieve).
