    The lowest state J=0 corresponds to the L and S parallel pointing in opposite directions, this is J=|L-S|

    The middle state J=1 corresponds to L and S perpendicular to eachother. This is J=|L-S|+1

    The highest state J=2 corresponds to L and S parallel and pointing in the same direction. This is J=|L+S|
