If more nucleons are added to the nucleus the mean square radius will increase, so the electric monopole shifts increase the energy levels. The negative charge that is located inside the nucleus can be used to explain the toy model’s lower energy level. The attractive Coulomb force between the charges of the nucleus and the negative charge results in a decrease in the mean square radius, which could explain the opposite effect.
