    The quantum picture has two distinct energy levels for I = 1. In the classical toy model, the dumbbell can be oriented in any direction, therefore it has an energy spectrum.

    We can approximate this energy spectrum by choosing a nucleus with very high I and thus also many possible values for m. Taking the limit for I to infinity, the amount of energy levels also approaches infinity, so the distinct energy levels become a spectrum.
