overlap contribution
In the monopole term of the Coulomb interaction between nuclei and electrons, there was an additional effect due to electron penetration in the nucleus (monopole shift). Now, we’ll examine what happens to the magnetic dipole term when electrons penetrate the nucleus.
You will understand similarities (in principle) and differences (in practice) between the impact of electron penetration in the nucleus for the electric monopole term and the magnetic dipole term. You will understand the Bohr-Weisskopf effect, and why it matters for nuclear physics.
Two questions for this video:
1. Imagine a perfectly spherical nucleus, with non-zero radius. Imagine all electron charges stay outside that nucleus. Will there be energy corrections due to the finite size of this nucleus? Why (not)?
